As of 2017 the legal status of Birch Road is unclear - it is currently the subject of a right of way application. The landowner believes it to be a private road, but has given permission for pedestrians, cyclists and equestrians to use it. This photo shows the surface just after it had received a tarmacadem coating, a huge improvement on the unpaved track it used to be. This now provides a very safe link between Sinderland Lane and Urmston.
