The cattle grids are a huge improvement over the old pinch stiles that used to prevent cattle from wandering off the commons. However, in a step backwards, the barriers have recently been fitted with these arms, jutting out into the path. The reason is reportedly to stop cattle straddling the grid to escape, however they make a narrow gap even narrower, could snag the ends of a handlebar, and would do a lot of damage to small hands.
The Council assures me that they are just a temporary measure while wider cattle grids are installed. Let's hope so.
