[Date image taken: Unknown] Marmalade Lane (between Graham Road, Starr End and Topper Street, Cambridge). Cambridge Cohousing at Marmalade Lane, Orchard Park host a Babboe Curve electric cargo trike for use on a membership basis by residents in Orchard Park. Members pay £30-40 a year for free booked access. The scheme received support from South Cambridgeshire District Council as part of its zero carbon communities grant scheme and Cambridgeshire County Council from EU grant money to promote use of cargo bikes.
The aims are to:
- promote community-led solutions to the climate emergency,
- reduce the use and ownership of cars to reduce the consumption of CO,
- promote local awareness of the climate emergency and the need for individual action, and the contribution transport choices can make through community engagement activities, and
- provide a case study on the viability and value of community-led shared electric bike schemes with a view to the project being extended or copied elsewhere.
Cohousing communities are intentional communities where the design is used to promote social interactions and while residents have their own self-contained homes, there is an emphasis on shared spaces, often with a shared 'Common House' and a shared garden. Future residents are involved in the design process and go on to collectively manage the community.
Marmalade Lane is a 42-home multi-generational cohousing community in Orchard Park, about 2 miles from Cambridge city centre. The award-winning and innovative development was a result of collaboration between the landowners, Cambridge City Council, TOWN and Trivselus, the developers and the K1 Cohousing Project formed of future residents. The homes were all market sale but there are some homes available to rent. A mailing list is maintained for those interested. The community also runs a community car club for residents and has its own internal shop.
