[UPDATE: COUNT and result: #174657.] [Image taken 29.9.21] Bootham Terrace, York. The space needs an urgent rethink. But not the kneejerk reaction that seems to be what's happened between 25.9.21 and today: railings have been reinstalled on the far side (see: #174512). This is a critical and hugely oversubscribed people space. The railings on this side are at the end of an alley that leads to/from St Peter's School as well as further residential areas. The gap between the stone bollard and the new railings on the other side leads to the town centre, the river, Scarborough Bridge (accessible, motor traffic-free). There are guest houses and hotels within walking distance (including for people pulling wheeled luggage). The road to the left leads up to Bootham to/from which people on foot, on cycles and in mobility scooters/wheelchairs funnel from the surrounding streets and other parts of Clifton and beyond. New housing is planned for the former football ground and for Duncombe Barracks. The intuitive and shortest route for people on cycles, foot and in mobility scooters/wheelchairs will be to Bootham and into Bootham Terrace (the road to the left in this image) and down to here. Creating further pressure on this limited space with no sight lines and a steep gradient (from Bootham along Bootham Terrace). The existing 'design' is a fudge. It fails everyone except perhaps motorists who are at best slightly inconvenienced if they are responsible and drop their speeds and give way to human traffic. The tiny bit of drop kerb between the grating and the railings on this side is used by at least one person in a tiny mobility scooter. How do people in wider machines manage?
