For a time this sign (with its taped over header) marked the entrance to the historic central area of Cambridge from Castle Street. But thankfully by 2008 this grim piece of visual pollution has gone. It was replaced by a brass totem pole which looked great for a while until it was struck by a vehicle.
The phrase "Pedestrian Zone" is a lie as the pedestrian zone did not officially start here. Even where it did start buses, taxis, vehicles on loading duty were all permitted. Cycles were (partially) banned at the time, but this was lifted in 2003.
